Choosing a Wheelchair Vehicle Lift

With so many wheelchair vehicle lifts on the market, it can be difficult to find a model that fits your vehicle and your mobility needs. We’ve assembled all the info you need to compare your options and select the best vehicle lift for your needs.

What is a Wheelchair Vehicle Lift?

Wheelchair vehicle lifts allow you to travel by car with your wheelchair or mobility scooter. Whether you need an option that allows you to remain in your mobility aid or one that transports it on the back of your vehicle, there are options available to meet your needs.

Do I Need a Wheelchair Vehicle Lift?

If a wheelchair or mobility scooter is a necessary part of your life and you want the opportunity to travel to locations outside your home, then a vehicle lift can be a great investment. While some wheelchairs and mobility scooters can fit in your vehicle on their own, a lift can help you load your mobility aid independently and prevent back injuries in others.

A vehicle lift can also be helpful for those who don’t rely on a wheelchair or mobility scooter around the house. They can enable independent travel and allow you to go further distances than you may comfortably be able to on foot.

Will a Wheelchair Lift Fit My Car?

The short answer is yes – there is most likely a wheelchair lift that will fit your car, truck, van, or SUV. Wheelchair vehicle lifts are available in different sizes, styles, and price points so there is a solution for every individual and vehicle.

The Three Types of Vehicle Lifts

When choosing a wheelchair vehicle lift, there are three options to choose from based on your type of vehicle and your needs.

Hoist Lifts

A hoist lift (also called an inside auto lift) allows you to lift your wheelchair into a van/minivan, SUV, or truck. They transport your mobility aid inside your vehicle but do not allow you to ride in your wheelchair or scooter while it is being lifted. Hoist lifts don’t have a platform, giving them a space-saving footprint. They also won’t block your vehicle’s backup camera.

Hitch-Mounted Lifts

A hitch-mounted lift (also called an outside lift) raises and stores your wheelchair outside the vehicle. This is the best lift option for a car or sedan. Hitch-mounted lifts save space inside your vehicle so you can still use your trunk for luggage or other storage. Some models of these lifts can also be used with vans, trucks, and SUVs.

Hybrid Lifts

A hybrid lift (or platform lift) allows a wheelchair or mobility scooter user to roll directly onto a platform and be lifted into their vehicle. This style of lift is extremely useful for individuals who rely on their mobility aid and cannot ambulate without it. These lifts typically require customized vehicles to allow the passenger to ride (or even drive) safely.Want to check out wheelchair vehicle lift options that are compatible with your car, truck, van, or SUV?
